Region One Education Service Center (Region One) was awarded $450,000 for a span of three years to re-engage students ages 18-26 and assist them with earning a high school diploma and post-secondary credential, paving the way to successful careers. The award was provided by the Trellis Foundation, an organization that focuses on improving post-secondary success for low-income students.

During the 2023-2024 school year, Region One initiated its comprehensive dropout recovery initiative, working with Edcouch-Elsa, Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (PSJA), and Weslaco Independent School Districts.

Last fall, PSJA ISD reintroduced its dropout recovery program, serving over 200 individuals and graduating over 80 students. Edcouch-Elsa ISD and Weslaco ISD launched their dropout recovery programs this school year.

The programs are free and open to all eligible participants, regardless of where they reside. Adults ages 18–26 can complete their secondary education at any of the three partner school districts.

Through this funding, a college transition specialist will support partner school systems by bringing expert knowledge and guidance that addresses the unique challenges faced by students re-entering or continuing their education. The specialist will provide personalized guidance in navigating college admissions, financial aid and academic planning, according to Darcia Cuellar, Region One Dropout Recovery Initiative Senior Director.

“Re-entering education can be a very overwhelming experience,” Cuellar said. “College transition specialists help address barriers such as low motivation, academic gaps and personal obstacles, fostering a supportive environment that enhances student retention and achievement. By bridging gaps in resources and offering tailored advice, college transition specialists play a vital role in empowering students to succeed, enhancing the overall effectiveness and impact of dropout recovery programs.”

Region One will also support students participating in the programs through stipends, earned by engaging in career internships and other workshops. This targeted approach focuses resources on those who need them most, providing the necessary support to help individuals achieve their educational and career goals.

“We are working with partner school systems to help students earn certificates and enter high-wage, in-demand careers,” said Dr. Daniel P. King, Region One Executive Director. “The program’s career training is tailored to meet workforce demands in the region, equipping participants with the education, experience and credentials needed to secure well-paying careers.”

Career pathways the program will offer include manufacturing/welding, electrician, patient care technician and information technology.

All three participating school districts are now accepting students. Call (956) 984-6149 for more information and guidance.
